From the very beginning of the programme, students will embark on their research project, developing their skills through hands-on experience in the laboratory of their supervisor(s). With guidance from their supervisors, students can also take full advantage of the University's extensive range of lecture courses and specialist training modules, selecting opportunities that best support the academic development of their research. 

Alongside their research training, students will participate in a cohort-based programme of transferable skills development designed to equip them for successful research careers and a wide range of opportunities beyond academia. Students will also have the opportunity to undertake leadership and innovation training provided by the Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT), with the flexibility to complete these courses at points that best complement their individual research priorities.

Throughout the programme, students will become part of a supportive and collaborative research community. Regular lunchtime seminars and an annual symposium will provide opportunities to present research, exchange ideas, and receive constructive feedback in a high-trust environment among peers. The DTP will also organise fully funded retreats, bringing together students and supervisors for dedicated time away from the laboratory to discuss science in a different setting, strengthen collaborations, and build lasting professional relationships. 

The Generative Biology DTP offers a comprehensive funding package for both UK (Home) and international students, ensuring you can focus on your research from day one. There is no cap on the number of international places available each year.

The funding package includes:

• Full tuition fees for the entire four-year DPhil programme.
• A generous tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate plus an additional £10,000 per year to support living costs. 
• A £15,000 Research Training and Support Grant (RTSG) to be used over the four years for specialist training, conference attendance, and research-related travel.
• Coverage of visa costs and the UK Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) for international students.
• A laptop to support your studies and research.
